We can’t wait to take these for a spin on the Golden Quadrilateral
We aren’t talking about V12s of 6-litre behemoths here. These aren’t
speed demons capable of continental drifts and will not win awards when
it comes to technological brilliance. Yet, these three cars set to
release this year are supercars in their own right, which keep the
extremes in check and still give you, the driver, the pleasure of a
proper road-legal and cheaper option to a sports car.
1.Subaru BRZ:-
The ride height on this baby has been kept deliberately low. To keep the
centre-of-gravity on this 1,200kg coupe firmly directed downwards,
Subaru’s engineers have tried to push maximum amount of the car’s weight
as close to the ground as possible. If you were to stand near the car,
over 50 per cent of the car’s weight is below knee level. And we’re
harping about the weight-balance ratio and ride height for a reason –
there’s a (some might argue, underpowered) four-cylinder 2.0-litre
engine underneath that still performs really well when thrashed around
the track. With lightning speed you will be plummeted past 4,000rpm and
200bhp which will be enough to satisfy all your desires for speed.
2.Toyota GT 86:-
There’s a curious case with the Toyota
GT 86. This car and the Subaru BRZ are incredibly similar. Toyota did
collaborate with Subaru to design the engine of the BRZ. But it seems
that Toyota went back to their design studio with loads of inspiration
too. When you compare their GT 86, due to hit the market by June,
there’s a whole lot of similarities. Both have an inline four-cylinder
2-litre 200 bhp engine and the two seem like a cop-paste job of each
other on the exterior, well almost. Thankfully, there are a few
characteristics that can help you to tell them apart. The front bumpers
of the GT86 resemble the Lexus LFA, while that of the BRZ is quite
similar to Toyota’s Paseo. We’re going to reserve our judgment on the
differences on the ride quality of these two machines until we can test
them later this year.
3.Nissan GT-R:-
We saw this on display at the Delhi Auto Expo 2012
and we can’t wait for it to be released here by the end of this year.
What makes this a winner in our books is that at approximately Rs 70
lakhs, you can now get a cheaper competitor to the Porshces
and Astons, while not having to compromise on specs. With the GT-R you
get a 3.8-litre twin-turbo 474 bhp V6 that’s capable of putting all its
550 horses to task to chase down a Porsche. With two seats in the back,
this could very well double-up as family saloon too (a powerful and sexy
one at that too).
